Can you correct a problem you are unaware of?
Can you meet all of the parameters if you dont know what the parameters are?
Will a person maintain a high level of motivation and enthusiasm by being reprimanded for not meeting these unknown expectations?
The answer to all of these questions is No. Yet day in and day out people are subjected to this in their personal, professional and online lives (yes we have 3 lives now. Only 6 more to cats on).
This is why I really like the informal performance reviews. Sure, it sucks to be reminded I’m not perfect, but who is? I might be Michael Freaking Poppins, but even then I’m only “Practically perfect in every way”
Safety Pros: every time you talk with a crew member about safety in the field you are conducting a performance review. Remember this. It’s important. You may not think you are, but you are. If you tell them the ladder is 26 feet away and needs to be 25 or less they receive it as a deficiency in performance. This is why we have to be diligent about mentioning the good stuff. If we spend 90% of our time on the corrections it makes us 90% jerks. There’s a lot of good stuff out there, make sure to mention it along with the improvement areas.
